BEC is a 2-3-day seminar for outdoor adventurers, group leaders, climbers and hikers. Sprained ankles, blisters, sunburns or simple falls are minor challenges when you are in town. But how do you deal with them when you’re high in the mountains, or on a simple day hike, miles from the nearest road? Lives have been lost due to relatively small injuries, because the hiker did not have the basic medical skills and knowledge taught in this interactive, experiential, hands-on class.

This program was developed in response to requests from wilderness lovers wanting skills to address medical situations that happen during hikes and back-woods travel, so they could feel safe to travel alone or in small groups. The basic first aid requirements of the National Safety Council form the foundation of this course in Wilderness Emergency Care. Topics covered include primary assessment and secondary survey, shock, soft tissue injury, dislocations, snake and insect bites, wound closures, spinal cord injury management, hypothermia, hyperthermia, and high-altitude illness, as well as evacuation techniques and the emotional and psychological aspects of emergency care.

Clubs, hiking groups, meet-up folks, seniors, and schools can request a custom program scheduled around their unique needs and time preferences. Classes are ideally held in an outdoor setting, or in a location which has access to a park or other area in which simulated rescue scenarios can take place. Call or email to discuss your individual interests and needs.
